Digital nomad or remote worker

Consulates distinguish two profiles: the digital nomad works as self-employed using technology tools, and the remote worker is an employee or collaborator of a company. In both cases the activity must be highly qualified, with a tertiary degree of at least three years or equivalent professional experience, and at least six months of experience in the field.

Income, insurance and housing

You need lawful annual income of at least three times the minimum for exemption from healthcare co-payments: the New York consulate puts it at about €24,789 a year. You also need health insurance for the whole period with minimum cover of €30,000 and a registered lease or property title in your name in Italy.

Process, arrival and family

Apply at least 30 days before travelling; processing can take up to 90 days for remote workers and 120 for digital nomads. On arrival you have eight working days to request the residence permit at the Questura; it lasts one year and is renewed while work, housing and insurance remain valid. Your partner and children under 18 can join you.

Taxes and tax residence

Since 2024 you are tax resident in Italy if for most of the year (183 days, 184 in leap years) you meet at least one of these criteria: habitual residence, domicile understood as the place of your personal and family relationships, physical presence in the country counting parts of days, or registration in the resident population register.
