Tax residence since 2024

Since 2024 you are tax resident in Italy if for most of the year (183 days, 184 in leap years) you meet at least one of these criteria: habitual residence, domicile understood as the place of your personal and family relationships, physical presence in the country counting parts of days, or registration in the resident population register.

Residents: all income

Under Article 3 of the consolidated income tax law, residents are taxed on all their income and non-residents only on income produced in Italy. With a one-year permit and your own housing you will very likely become resident: review the treaty with your country and the regimes for people moving their residence with an adviser.

Prepare your tax consultation

Gather stay dates, previous residence, contract, clients and income by category. Ask about treaty, registration, returns, VAT and contributions for your profile, and deadlines for the relevant year. Special benefits require confirming conditions and application.

Things to keep in mind

These points vary with your situation, your home country or the consulate. They are worth confirming with the official source before you take the next step.

  • Access to special regimes for new residents or inbound workers.
  • Treaty with your country and social contributions.
