Travel and health insurance for digital nomads: what to compare

Travel insurance is not the same as health insurance for residence. If you are applying for a visa, first confirm the cover the consulate requires; then compare policies with those conditions in hand.

What to compare before signing up

  1. 1

    Visa requirement

Some pathways require private health insurance without co-payments or waiting periods, issued by an insurer authorised in the country. Ask for the certificate the consulate accepts.

  2. 2

    Territory and home country

Check whether it covers your country of residence, the United States and visits home, and with what limits.

  3. 3

    Exclusions

Pre-existing conditions, sports, mental health, maternity and repatriation often have their own conditions.

  4. 4

    Payment and renewal

Monthly subscription or per-trip policy: check the maximum duration, how it renews and what happens if you stop paying.
