VITEM XIV: digital nomad

Resolution 45 provides it for immigrants who, remotely and using information technology, can do their work in Brazil for a foreign employer. You need a notarised declaration of your ability to work remotely, the employment or services contract with the foreign employer and proof of means of subsistence from a foreign source.

Income, insurance and documents

You must show monthly foreign-source income of at least US$1,500 or available bank funds of at least US$18,000. The consulate also asks for health insurance valid in Brazil, a criminal record certificate and apostilled documents. In Lisbon, for example, the fee is EUR 100 and the application starts in the e-Consular system.

Arrival, term and renewal

Initial residence is up to one year and can be renewed for the same period by presenting the documents again, the migration card and criminal record certificates. After arriving you have 90 days to register with the Federal Police. If you are already in Brazil, you can request residence authorisation directly from the Ministry of Justice.

Taxes and tax residence

For the Federal Revenue, a foreigner with a temporary visa becomes tax resident on the day they complete 184 days in Brazil, consecutive or not, within up to twelve months. If they leave before reaching that number, the twelve-month count restarts with the next entry. With a one-year visa you will probably pass it.
