Taxes and tax residence: Brazil

For the Federal Revenue, a foreigner with a temporary visa becomes tax resident on the day they complete 184 days in Brazil, consecutive or not, within up to twelve months. If they leave before reaching that number, the twelve-month count restarts with the next entry. With a one-year visa you will probably pass it.

Brazilian and foreign income

Federal Revenue rules establish that residents are taxed on income and capital gains obtained in Brazil and abroad. For someone paid by a foreign employer, that can mean monthly payments and an annual return: review the treaty with your country and when your filing obligations start with an adviser.

Prepare your tax consultation

Gather stay dates, previous residence, contract, clients and income by category. Ask about treaty, registration, returns, VAT and contributions for your profile, and deadlines for the relevant year. Special benefits require confirming conditions and application.

Things to keep in mind

These points vary with your situation, your home country or the consulate. They are worth confirming with the official source before you take the next step.

  • Monthly payment obligations (carnê-leão) and annual return for your profile.
  • Treaty with your country and credit for taxes paid abroad.
