Uruguay digital nomad visa

Uruguay lets you live there for a year as a digital nomad with a provisional identity document: six months, renewable once for another six, to work remotely for entities abroad. There is no minimum income: a sworn statement that you have enough funds is enough. You enter as a tourist and apply online or at the National Immigration Directorate.

Who can apply

Since 2022, the decree governing the provisional identity document covers anyone working remotely from Uruguay for entities based abroad. Unlike other temporary workers, you do not have to register with Uruguay's social security. The government presents it for people who are self-employed or work for companies abroad.

How to apply

You enter Uruguay as a tourist and apply for the digital nomad provisional identity document online, with a gub.uy account, or in person in Montevideo or at regional offices. The first application asks for the document you entered with and a sworn statement, including that you have enough funds to support yourself. Once authorised, you are notified by email to go to the National Civil Identification Directorate. The published cost is 55.71 indexed units and cannot be paid from abroad.

Renewal and after the year

The document lasts up to 180 days and is renewed once for another 180. To renew you need your current Uruguayan document, a new sworn statement, apostilled or legalised and translated criminal records from countries where you lived six months or more in the last five years, and a vaccination certificate issued in Uruguay. To stay longer, you must move to another residence category.

Taxes and tax residence

For the DGI you are tax resident if you stay more than 183 days in Uruguay in a calendar year, or if the core of your activities or economic or vital interests is in the country; the latter is presumed if your spouse and minor children live there. With six months plus six, it is easy to pass 183 days in one year: keep track of your days.

Things to keep in mind

These points vary with your situation, your home country or the consulate. They are worth confirming with the official source before you take the next step.

  • Whether your partner or children can apply for the same document or need another category.
  • Which documents you will be asked for to prove remote work and funds.
  • Whether your nationality needs a visa to enter Uruguay as a tourist.
